Helping A Friend Find Boston Area Housing
    Hi everyone!

My friend is moving to the Boston area and is looking for housing. Here are her requirements, quoted from her LJ:

-Less than $900 a month including utilities or $800 a month without utilities
-Accessible by public transportation (I like T better than bus, but bus is fine)
-Sanitary and does not violate building codes too flagrantly
    -Respectful, non-smoking housemates

She is OK living with animals. She is a cool, very geeky person. Her LJ is [info]etotheipi.

Does anyone have any leads? If you do, please contact me and I'll forward it on to her.

    Thanks!

    What I Believe, part n
I haven't watched a single second of the Democratic National Convention.
    I don't go to electoral-vote.com.
I tend to avoid reading political blogs.

    Why?
    There's no real point.
I know who I'm going to vote for, come election day.
I've known for a while, at this point.
Ergo, hearing any opinions on the topic is pretty much wasted effort for all parties.

    Why?
Because whether I agree with Obama or not,
and whether I think he's the strongest candidate or not,
and whether I think that he'll commit to any of the changes he has alluded to or not,
I see no other feasible choice.

    Why?
    I want balance, again.
I'm looking for the GOP to soak its collective head for at least four years and ruminate on its misdeeds.
I want the GOP to look inside itself and figure out what went wrong, and fix it.
    I have faith in them doing so;
being out of power when that's your only currency has a way of focusing the mind.

In short, I need the largest amount of leverage I can find to make that happen.
The Democratic candidate for president is the biggest lever I have.

Your arcane cat-pee-related knowledge could save a bean bag's life!!
Some of you may recall the giant blue bean bag in Sequoia and I's place. Sadly, the old thing has been peed upon by the cats too many times and, even after I hosed it down, smells... bad. It's currently sitting on the porch awaiting trash day. If someone can provide me with a sufficiently simple technique for getting bad smells out of vinyl, I might have space for it in my room. Anyone have ideas?

    moto!
My girlfriend and I just moved here from California and are getting settled in.  We are both from MA but I started riding motorcycles out in CA and she started riding on the back of mine.  Now we are back and I am noticing so many bikes and scooters and I swear it is more than I ever saw before when I lived here.  She says the same, but neither of us are sure if we are just noticing them more because we are more aware of them due to having taken up riding after we left.  Maybe gas prices are upping the interest?  What does everyone think?

    So, let's see.

Today was PT, where she beat the crap out of me and I learned some things in the process (hard-to-articulate things like how to hold my hips when working out these muscles, and that sort of thing). She pointed out that while, yes, the hamstring stretches were hard and would remain hard for some time, the stretch-point that a week ago was as far as I could get was now my comfortable "fall-back-to" position... so definite progress.

Also today was speech, where we did some goofy "you're the jury" exercises, which suffered from poor premise -- they all were built on the assumption that one of the cases (prosecution or defense) was necessarily correct, when in fact neither was proved beyond a reasonable doubt as far as I was concerned... too many questions left unanswered. Eventually I stopped worrying about it and gave them the answer they wanted. (Except in one case where the "right answer" depended on recognizing that I was looking at a picture of laced-up boots.)

Today was supposed to be my substitute occupational therapist, but signals got crossed and she didn't show.

Slept through much of the afternoon, went out for polyrythmic's birthday (wasn't interested in making today an Inulgence, so ate dinner at home then kept folks company with a side-dish of some carrots and a forkful of cake, which was about what I wanted to eat... dunno if this is sustainable, but it worked nicely as a one-shot, at least).

Now, shower and (much deferred) sleep.

    Good day.

    Book 26
      1-20 )
    1. Dubus III, Andre — House of Sand and Fog (351 pages)
    2. Kurkov, Andrey — Penguin Lost (251 pages)
    3. Bradbury, Ray — Dandelion Wine (247 pages)
    4. Bradbury, Ray — Farewell Summer (209 pages)
    5. Doran, Jamie and Piers Bizony — Starman: The Truth behind the Legend of Yuri Gagarin (241 pages)
    6. Makine, Andreï — A Life's Music (106 pages)

    Page count: 6400.

I always carry at least one book with me. (Which was pointed out to me a few months ago by the store clerk who asked, "What are you reading today? You always have a different book.") Always. Except this time.

I didn't take a book with me to the picnic on the Heath last Saturday because I was going there with a friend, meeting friends there, and coming back, I assumed, with a friend. I would have no opportunity to read without potentially being rude. But the friend who rode out with me took a different bus route home. Suddenly, I was being stared down by 30 minutes of reading time — and I wasn't packing! Really, I think I was just begging for excuses to duck into the book shop, conveniently only a block away, that had previously caught my eye.

I scanned the titles looking for something thin (after all, I still have several other books in progress) that caught my imagination and was cheap enough to override any guilt felt in buying yet another book. I found this little gem: Andreï Makine's A Life's Music.

At 106 pages, A Life's Music is thin enough it kept falling out of my pocket unnoticed, trying to get itself lost, like the book's main character. Yet this is not a particularly quick read. Every page is so loaded. I found myself re-reading certain passages to make sure I hadn't missed something, or because I realized what I'd just read could be taken differently. I found myself re-reading certain passages just for the sheer beauty of the language or the imagery. As I lingered over certain pages, I found myself trying to visualize this scene or that with my mind's eye, taking in as much as I could of what was being expressed without being said. This was a short book, but it contains within its pages as much as most books three times its length.

This is a beautiful story, a poignant story, and also a scathing indictment of the Soviet system. The narrator, waiting in a small town in the Urals for a train that is six-hours delayed because of the snow, meets an old man, hands silently gliding over a neglected piano, tears wetting his cheeks. During the train ride to Moscow, the man tells his story: how days before his debut piano recital his family was 'disappeared', how he avoided that same fate, though it meant suppressing his past, suppressing his music. The two paragraphs where the climax occurs six pages from the end form one of the most heart-rendingly beautiful passages I have read.

I have one minor criticism. The old man's story is told in the third person by the narrator, who is recounting a first person account. Yet towards the end we are told what other characters thought and felt. How could the old man know these thoughts and feelings if he weren't told them? It's only a minor flaw, and perhaps not even that, if we recognize that the old man's story is his version of events, and such embellishments do not diminish the power of his story.

    Wanted: Production/Rehearsal Assistant
As most of you know, PMRP's Tomes of Terror III Halloween show is auditioning, next week. Prior to auditions, I thought I'd put it out there that I'm going to be looking for a Production Assistant/Rehearsal Assistant to work with me.

This is a little different from a typical theatre Rehearsal Assistant position for a few key reasons.
    1) We have no blocking, so there's nothing for you to keep track of there.
    2) We don't have actors memorize lines, so there's no line work to be done.

It's a dual position, because I’m not only directing one of the plays, but I'm also the Administrative Producer for the show, so there will be a really varied set of responsibilities. Just ask [info]ladrescher, who had this role, last year. I think that the person will have a little more to do, this year, as I figure out how to delegate a little better. We were totally winging it. That woman's got moxie, I tell ya!

    Roles/Responsibilities:

-Help plan the cast party for November 1st
-Help plan and coordinate the Reynardine field trip on September 27th (attendance is encouraged, but not mandatory)
-Help us get the word out about the show (promotions, but no ad sales)
-Attend my rehearsal, once a week, on Mondays or Tuesdays (TBD) to be an extra set of eyes and pair of hands
-Attend production team meetings which will be every few weeks, probably on Thursday evenings (before movie night)
-Attend tech rehearsals and dress rehearsals leading up to the productions
-Would be great if you could attend all 4 performances
-The writer of the short story that I adapted will be coming into town on the 29th, so there may be a few little things to do for that, like make sure Neil and I remember to pick her up, etc.
    -Act as Green Room Monitor/Dresser
-There will be contact with all the actors and crew to remind them of scheduling, etc.
-You'd be point of first contact for my cast if they can't make it to a rehearsal.
-I would love someone to help coordinate the very little costuming that we do (also a fun part of the job!)

It's really kind of "Can you/Are you willing to do this?" We play it by ear and you would only be doing what you're comfortable doing.

Even if you're auditioning, please comment here to let me know if you'd be interested in a role like this, behind the scenes. If you express interest, it won't affect your audition or our casting decisions.

And in kitchen news, the new fridge is finally in! The water is not yet hooked up and it's not entirely seated in its cabinet, but it's there and more important, the old fridge is gone from the dining room. Yay! The kitchen work has resulted in my doing far less putting food by than last year, but I suppose there is still time. Not that the kitchen is done yet, but soon, my pretty, soon.
